Dealership DMS vs Delivery Platform
A DMS records what happened. A delivery platform coordinates what happens next. They’re different jobs, and the dealers that consistently hit delivery dates run both.
What a DMS is built for
A Dealer Management System is the system of record for the dealership. Every VIN, every deal, every RO, every dollar in and out of the general ledger lives there. It’s the source of truth for accounting, F&I paperwork, inventory, parts, and service. (For a full breakdown, see What is a dealership DMS.)
What a DMS is not built for: live operational workflow. It tells you what state a unit is in, but it doesn’t coordinate who’s doing what next, surface slips before they break a delivery date, or give the floor a mobile-first interface for the work itself.
What a delivery platform is built for
A delivery platform runs the operational floor between “deal signed” and “customer drives away.” That window is where most dealerships quietly lose days — and CSI — even when the DMS data looks clean.
- Live board of every unit currently between sold and delivered
- Stage-by-stage workflow — recon, accessories, F&I funding, detail, delivery prep
- Single owner and SLA per stage, not per department
- Real-time at-risk alerts when a stage slips, not month-end reports
- Mobile-first UX so the floor can actually update status from where they work
Why dealers run both
The DMS and the delivery platform answer different questions. The DMS answers “what is true about this unit?” The delivery platform answers “what needs to happen next and who’s on it?”
Trying to run delivery workflow inside a DMS usually produces the same three symptoms: status updates lag a day or two, the floor stops trusting the data, and slips only surface at month-end when they’ve already cost a sale. Trying to run accounting and F&I inside a workflow tool is even worse — it’s the wrong shape of software for the job.
Side-by-side
- DMS records the deal · delivery platform coordinates the delivery
- DMS is desktop, back-office, and accounting-shaped · delivery platform is mobile, floor-first, and workflow-shaped
- DMS reports on what happened · delivery platform alerts on what's about to slip
- DMS owns the ledger · delivery platform owns the cycle time
How DealerIQ fits
DealerIQ is the delivery platform. It plugs in next to your DMS, reads the deals and inventory you already have, and runs the live workflow that gets every unit out the door on time. The delivery board shows every active unit and its current stage; the Reports module surfaces cycle time, P90 aging, and the real cost of stuck inventory.
